Comfortaire is the originator of the Air Sleep System, and still
the best, although many companies have tried to replicate the comfort of
the original Comfortaire sleep system. Among these is Select Comfort,
whose sleep system is aggressively marketed through all types of media including
print, television, and radio. Even though Select Comfort is a fine company who
produce a very fine product, their huge marketing expenditures can not make
up for the fact that the Comfortaire Sleep System is still the finest
air sleep system available today. Here are just a few things you should
consider when comparing Comfortaire to Select Comfort.
Comfortaire uses 8 inch air chambers for the Cerulean and Celenia
models. All of the Select Comfort air beds, even their most expensive, use
a 6 inch air chamber.
The patent pending Comfortaire pump is the best pump available on
the market today. This ball-bearing driven pump should easily last 20
years without a hiccup, and despite its amazing performance, is extremely
quiet.
The digital control for the Comfortaire Celenia is much more
sophisticated than the digital control on the Select Comfort air beds.
The Celenia control features a memory function, instant-fill, and measures
back pressure on the mattress for an accurate reading of your comfort level.
The Select Comfort control does not include any of these features.
Select Comfort mattresses use a foam divider that runs down the middle of
the bed between the two air bladders. This creates a very distinct barrier
between the two sides of the bed, which can be an obvious disadvantage.
Comfortaire has designed their bladders to butt up against each other,
making this foam divider unnecessary.
Comfortaire has chosen to have all of their controls (two controls per
mattress) hard wired to the mattress while a few of the Select Comfort models
come with a single remote control. The hardwired system is the most reliable
and durable available, with the added advantage of never having to search
for a lost remote.
Comfortaire has designed their air chambers to run vertically (head to
toe) while Select Comfort's run horizontally (side to side). Is there really a
difference in sleep comfort because of which way the chambers run? Probably not.
The chambers are designed to distribute the air evenly when weight is on the bed,
which both systems do.
Select Comfort makes a very fine product and many people have chosen to make
the leap into air sleep because of their comprehensive advertising campaign.
One thing that should be remembered, however, is that the Select Comfort Air
Sleep System is a direct result of the innovations and imagination of
Comfortaire, the original air sleep system, and still the best.
